News and Notes from Tuesday Night's "Red Zone" Radio Program
Fantasy News and Notes 12-17-13:
The saga continues as it's uncertain again this week if Aaron Rodgers will be able to play or not. It's a true 50/50 prospect that he plays this week and hopefully we know for sure by Thursday. Once again, if Rodgers can't play Matt Flynn would get the start again week 16 in his place.
Cam Newton suffered a toe injury week 15 but it's considered minor and not something that will prevent him from playing in week 16.
Joe Flacco dodged a bullet and the knee injury he suffered last night is not considered serious and he is expected to be okay for week 16.
Carson Palmer suffered a sprained ankle week 15 but he is currently expected to be fine for week 16. Palmer's injury has been compared to the high ankle sprain suffered by Peyton Manning several weeks ago, and just like with Manning, since Palmer is not a QB who relies on his mobility much, it's not expected to prevent him from playing.
Jay Cutler made it through week 15 without any setbacks in his ankle and he will start again week 16.
E.J. Manuel suffered a minor knee sprain week 15 but he was able to play through it and is expected to start week 16 for Buffalo.
Case Keenum suffered a sprained thumb on his throwing hand week 15, but he was able to finish the game. However, his status for week 16 is uncertain and if he can't play, Matt Schaub would get the start. With the Texans looking like they've packed in the season I can't imagine starting a Texans QB in almost any fantasy league.
Another strong showing by Minnesota's Matt Cassel has earned him the start in week 16 over Christian Ponder. Expect Cassel to finish out the season as the Vikings starting QB.
Adrian Peterson is a possibility to play week 16 after sitting out week 15 with his mid-foot sprain. While I applaud the man for his ethics and desire to play despite these last 2 games being completely meaningless for the Vikings, why the team would put him at any risk of further injury when he's not healthy and have nothing to play for seems like insanity. Maybe there's some incentive in his contract he's trying to achieve but otherwise, I can't think of any reason why the Vikings just don't rest him and make sure he is fully ready for 2014. But that's just me making sense. Officially, consider Peterson questionable for week 16, along with Toby Gerhart also being questionable because of his hamstring injury. Those of you who grabbed Matt Asiata and played him as a desperation option, you may be able to count on him again depending on what finally gets resolved with Peterson and Gerhart.
Zac Stacy suffered a hip injury but it's considered very minor. Stacy is likely to sit out Wednesday's practice but he's fully expected to start without issue week 16.
Donald Brown is uncertain to play week 16 after suffering a stinger. It hasn't been clarified if it was a neck stinger, shoulder stinger, arm stinger, or whatever, but whatever type it is, it prevented him from finishing week 15 and the Colts must be concerned about his availability week 16 as they went out today and signed Shaun Draughn to provide RB depth behind Trent Richardson. It's early in the week but reading the signs I'd say Brown is unlikely to play and that Richardson will carry the load week 16 for the Colts.
Ben Tate is uncertain to play week 16 after aggravating the cracked ribs injury he's been playing through the last few weeks. Hopefully we know more by Thursday but for now consider Tate to be questionable for week 16. Dennis Johnson would start for the Texans if Tate can't play.
Andre Ellington suffered a bruised thigh injury. Tentatively he is expected to be okay to play week 16 for Arizona.
It's uncertain if Maurice Jones-Drew will play week 16 or not. MJD missed week 15 with a hamstring injury. If he's unable to play, Jordan Todman would again dominate playing time for the Jaguars.
Oakland tentatively expects to have Darren McFadden back in week 16. McFadden has missed the last several games with an ankle injury. But even if McFadden plays, he'll just be the top backup and change of pace to Rashad Jennings. Jennings is the Raiders top RB.
Willis McGahee may play week 16 for Cleveland after missing week 15 with a concussion. Like with Adrian Peterson, this begs the question of "why?". McGahee has been sluggish most every week and wouldn't it suit the Browns better to see what they have with young guys Edwin Baker and Fozzy Whitaker? Especially since they don't seem inclined to give Chris Ogbonnaya any type of expanded role. McGahee's not coming back next season and his career is likely over. If there's any thinking going on in Cleveland they'll make Baker the starter and mix in a lot of Whitaker. But that's just me being reasonable again and what's more likely to happen is that McGahee gets cleared to play, and causes a timeshare with Baker; making neither worth fantasy consideration.
Peyton Hillis suffered a concussion week 15 and he's very uncertain to play week 16. If he can't play, Michael Cox would be the top backup to Andre Brown.
Larry Fitzgerald is uncertain to play week 16 because of the concussion he suffered week 15. Fitz will need to pass all of his concussion tests before he'll be allowed to play.
Jacksonville placed Cecil Shorts on injured reserve today because of the groin injury he aggravated back in week 14. His season is done.
Victor Cruz is very uncertain to play week 16 after suffering a concussion and knee sprain in week 15. It's very likely Cruz will be placed on injured reserve with the Giants season having spiraled into disaster.
Wes Welker is uncertain to play week 16 because of the concussion that caused him to miss week 15. While he hasn't been ruled out yet, I'd be surprised if he suited up this week.
No word yet on whether the Packers are close to activating Randall Cobb from the IR/Designated for Return list. Cobb is eligible to be activated at any time and just needs to show he's recovered from his broken leg.
It's unknown if Percy Harvin will play week 16 or not. Seattle would be foolish to rush Harvin back instead of letting him get over his ailing hip. I don't expect Harvin to play.
Tavon Austin is also uncertain to play week 16 after missing week 15 with an ankle injury. For now, consider Austin to be questionable.
The Patriots tentatively expect to have back one or both of Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins in week 16. Both players have missed the last 2 games with injuries but both were able to practice some late in the week last week and so there's optimism for each. It's good timing too as Josh Boyce suffered a leg injury and his status for week 16 is uncertain.
As long as he suffers no setbacks this week, John Carlson is tentatively expected to return and play week 16 after missing week 15 with a concussion.
Still no word on whether Owen Daniels is ready to return from the IR/Designated for return list this week or not. He's been eligible to come back the last 2 weeks but hasn't been able to practice with the team because of his leg injury. At this late time, it's probable the Texans just place him on injured reserve. It would do more harm than good to bring him back now. The Texans may be without Garrett Graham as well. Graham missed week 15 with a hamstring injury. Ryan Griffin could finish out the year as the starting TE for Houston.
Jordan Reed is expected to be placed on injured reserve any day now. Reed is still suffering concussion like symptoms and you would think with the NFL's concern about the long term effects related to this type of injury Washington would exercise extreme caution in a lost season.
Cincinnati may be without Jermaine Gresham week 16 because of a hip injury suffered week 15. This would seriously bring up the value of Tyler Eifert, but currently Gresham's status is unknown.
Brandon Pettigrew suffered an ankle injury last night but there's been no word whether it's serious or not. For now consider him to be questionable for week 16.
No word yet on how serious the foot injury suffered by Green Bay's Brandon Bostick is. Bostick was carted off the field week 15 with it but there's been no update on him yet.
New Orleans waived Garrett Hartley today. Hartley had made only 22 of 30 FGA's on the season. New Orleas has signed Shayne Graham to take his place.
