News and Notes from Tuesday Night's "Red Zone" Radio Program
Fantasy News and Notes 12-03-13:
It's uncertain if Aaron Rodgers will be able to play week 14 or not. Rodgers has been out the last few weeks with a broken collarbone. He's supposedly undergoing more tests this week to see if he can gain medical clearance. It's not a sure thing, but he's sounding doubtful to play. If he doesn't, Matt Flynn would start again for the Packers.
Jay Cutler's status for week 14 is uncertain. Cutler's still hobbled by a high ankle sprain suffered a few weeks back. If he can't go in Monday night's game, Josh McCown will start for Chicago.
Minnesota's Christian Ponder suffered a concussion week 13 and his status for week 14 is very uncertain. Matt Cassel came in and led the Vikings to a victory week 13 and it's uncertain if he, or Josh Freeman would get the start if Ponder can't play. If I had to guess, I'd say Cassel would likely start, but that's just a guess.
Cleveland's QB situation for week 14 is unclear. Brandon Weeden suffered a concussion week 13 and he is considered unlikely to be cleared in time. Jason Campbell missed week 13 with a concussion and it sounds like he still hasn't gotten clearance to return from it yet. The Browns went out and signed Caleb Hanie today as insurance. It's uncertain whether Hanie, or Alex Tanney would start if neither Campbell nor Weeden can play.
The Jets reportedly will stay with struggling rookie Geno Smith as their starting QB despite his string of horrible games. That tells you all you need to know about Matt Simms and David Garrard.
Pittsburgh is hoping to have Le'Veon Bell for week 14. Bell suffered a concussion on Thanksgiving night, but the extra time off should be enough for him to gain clearance. Tentatively expect Bell to be okay for week 14. If he is unable to play, Jonathan Dwyer likely would start and be spelled frequently by Felix Jones.
Oakland hopes to have Rashad Jennings for week 14. Jennings also suffered a concussion on Thanksgiving. There's been no word from the Raiders though about his condition. If Jennings can't play Darren McFadden would get to be the featured RB and could retake the job.
The Patriots demotion of Stevan Ridley is likely to last another week. It's just a guess though on my part. LeGarrette Blount had a decent game week 13 without fumbling. Shane Vereen is still the only Patriots RB that can be trusted unless Bill Belichick surprises us all by announcing that Blount is his new starting RB.
Don't be surprised if Trent Richardson's demotion to just being Donald Brown's backup is permanent the rest of this season. Brown outplayed Richardson even when Richardson was getting most of the work.
It's too early in the week to know whether DeAngelo Williams will be able to play week 14 or not. Williams missed week 13 because of a quad injury.
Dallas backup RB Lance Dunbar suffered a knee injury Thanksgiving Day and his season is over. Joseph Randle moves forward as the top backup to DeMarco Murray.
Percy Harvin may not play again in the regular season. Harvin reportedly did suffer some sort of aggravation of his hip injury in his game action back in week 11 and that caused him to miss last night. The Seahawks haven't said anything but with a playoff spot locked up, and a 2 game lead on homefield advantage throughout the playoffs, I'd be surprised if they didn't give Harvin as much time as he needs to heal up. Jermaine Kearse and Doug Baldwin figure to be the beneficiaries if Seattle does the wise thing.
The Patriots may be without both Aaron Dobson and Kenbrell Thompkins week 14. Dobson missed week 13 with what's been called a sprained foot; Thompkins suffered a hip injury week 13 and was unable to finish the game.
Santonio Holmes lasted all of 3 plays week 13 before he had to come out of the game because of his hamstring injury. His status for week 14 is very uncertain. Jets teammate Jeremy Kerley is also uncertain for week 14 because of the dislocated elbow injury that has caused him to miss the last 4 games. One more Jets note, Josh Cribbs has gone on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. He wasn't a fantasy factor anyway.
No word if Oakland will be getting back Denarius Moore this week or not. Moore has missed the last 2 games with a shoulder injury and it has allowed Andre Holmes to showcase his talents. Expect Holmes to remain part of the passing offense even if Moore is able to play.
Also no word on whether San Diego's Eddie Royal will be able to play week 14 or not. Royal missed week 13 with chest and toe injuries.
Owen Daniels is not ready to return from the IR/Designated for return list yet. He was eligible to come back this week but he's still unable to practice because of his broken leg injury.
It's hoped that after missing the last 2 games that Julius Thomas will be able to return and play week 14. Thomas has been out with a knee injury.
Jordan Reed was a surprise inactive week 13. Reportedly he was cleared to return from the concussion that caused him to miss week 12 but then started to experience a headache in pre-game warm-ups. Hopefully we get word about him early in the week.
