News and Notes 11-23-11

*-Kyle Orton was claimed off waivers today by Kansas City. This is hardly a surprise as the Chiefs were desperate after seeing Tyler Palko against the Patriots injury depleted secondary. Palko is likely to start this week against Pittsburgh but I fully expect Orton to take over as the new Chiefs starting QB in week 13. To make room for Orton the Chiefs waived WR Keary Colbert.

*-With Kansas City having claimed Orton that means Chicago goes forward with Caleb Hanie as their starting QB. They signed veteran free agent Josh McCown as an insurance veteran with experience in Mike Martz's offensive system.

*-Michael Vick was unable to practice today and there's a lot of speculation that he will miss week 12 because of his ribs injury. Tentatively expect Vince Young to start against the Patriots this week.

*-Matt Schaub apparently got bad news about his foot injury as Houston placed him on injured reserve earlier today. It's likely that Schaub will require surgery. Until he has it, we won't have a timetable for when he'll be able to return to practices in 2012. Matt Leinart will finish out the season as the Texans starting QB. Houston also signed Kellen Clemens to be a veteran backup as the only other QB they have on their roster is rookie T.J. Yates.

*-Kevin Kolb was able to practice in limited fashion today, some of it with the first team offense and it now appears he has a better than 50/50 chance to start week 12 barring any setbacks in practices later this week. John Skelton will head back to the bench if Kolb holds up.

*-Indianapolis declared Curtis Painter will start week 12. There was speculation that they may decide to turn to Dan Orlovsky after their bye week, but they are sticking with Painter for now. That could change if Painter has another miserable performance though.

*-Five other QB's who were limited in practices but fully expected to be fine to start this week are Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger (thumb), Cincinnati's Andy Dalton (shoulder), Minnesota's Christian Ponder (knee), Tennessee's Matt Hasselbeck (elbow) and Seattle's Tarvaris Jackson (pectoral).

Running Backs

*-Fred Jackson was placed on injured reserve today as his calf injury turned out to be a fractured leg bone. C.J. Spiller takes over as the starting primary RB going forward. Buffalo signed Tashard Choice today and he will compete with rookie Johnny White for the top backup job. Dynasty leaguers will want to hold onto Jackson but if you're in a re-draft league, you can drop him. Spiller is a priority add as new starting RB's are hard to come by at this point in the season.

*-James Starks is Questionable and considered a game time decision with his knee and ankle injuries. While he may be active, I have a hard time believing he's going to be anywhere near effective on a short week with both injuries. At best I think he may be active in the same type of emergency role Joseph Addai has served in the last few games for the Colts. I fully expect Ryan Grant to be the primary RB regardless of whether Starks plays or not, and I also expect we'll see John Kuhn get some extra playing time as well.

*-As expected, Detroit ruled Jahvid Best OUT for tomorrow's game. There's still no timetable for his return from concussion like symptoms. Kevin Smith will start and be the primary RB with Maurice Morris moving into a change of pace role. Keiland Williams likely has lost all potential value.

*-Cleveland may have Montario Hardesty back this week after all. It originally sounded like Hardesty would miss several weeks with his calf muscle tear, but he was limited in practice today and is tentatively expected to be able to play week 12 barring setbacks in practice this week. He'd likely still be limited some though so a split between him and Chris Ogbonnaya is likely. Such a split makes neither a good bet for fantasy production given the tough matchup against Cincinnati this week.

*-Darren McFadden missed practice today and he isn't likely to be able to play this week. Expect Michael Bush to be the feature RB again for the Raiders this week.

*-Although Felix Jones has been listed as Questionable on the injury report for tomorrow's game, he's fully expected to play in a complimentary role behind DeMarco Murray.

*-Two RB's were limited in practice but fully expected to be fine for this week. Those are San Francisco's Frank Gore (Probable; knee) and San Diego's Ryan Mathews (knee).

Wide Receivers

*-As expected Miles Austin has been ruled OUT for tomorrow's game because of his hamstring injury. Austin is tentatively expected to try practicing next week and possibly return week 13.

*-Santana Moss was able to practice in full today and it now appears that he will be able to return a couple of weeks earlier than we originally thought he'd be able to from his hand surgery. Barring any setbacks in practice this week Moss is expected to play week 12. If he's available on your free agent wires, you might want to grab him.

*-Jeremy Maclin was able to practice today and it now looks like he will be able to play this week for the Eagles when they take on New England. He's risky with his shoulder and minor hamstring concerns but the matchup is juicy and barring any setbacks between now and Sunday I'd say start him.

*-Greg Jennings is probable for tomorrow with his minor knee injury and he'll be fine.

*-Also Probable is Calvin Johnson with a small ankle issue. He'll be fine as well.

*-A.J. Green was able to take part some in practice today and it now appears that while he's not fully over his hyper-extended knee, he should be okay to play this week. Just don't be surprised if he's listed as Questionable when the injury report comes out Friday night.

*-Julio Jones missed practice today but the Falcons say they are hoping he will be able to practice tomorrow. If he does, and has no setbacks in his injured hamstring by Friday, he should be okay for week 12. Be sure to check my Saturday team by team news and notes in my fantasy football blog for the latest on Jones and all teams playing this weekend.

*-Malcom Floyd missed practice today with his hip injury and it's sounding like he will again this week. Vincent Brown is likely to start in his place again.

*-Seattle's Sidney Rice was held out of practice today because of some knee soreness but currently he is fully expected to be okay to start this week against Washington.

*-Oakland could be without 3 WR's this week. Darrius Heyward-Bey has the spine and concussion injuries and just isn't likely to be ready by Sunday. Jacoby Ford is still not practicing yet because of his foot injury. Denarius Moore missed practice today with a foot injury as well. Of the 3, I'd say Moore is most likely to be able to play but this is just turning into a situation to avoid unless things get a lot better by Sunday.

*-Buffalo is hoping to have all three of Steve Johnson, David Nelson, and Naaman Roosevelt for this weekend despite each missing practice today with various minor ailments.

*-Pittsburgh hopes to have Emmanuel Sanders back this week. He was able to practice today and should play some despite being only a few weeks removed from a minor knee procedure. Likely though he will be no higher than 4th in the WR rotation.

Tight Ends

*-Dallas Clark has been ruled OUT for week 12 with his leg injury. Jacob Tamme will start in his place.

*-Visanthe Shiancoe missed practice today because of an aggravation to a hamstring injury that has plagued him this season. Currently he is expected to be okay to play. His teammate, Kyle Rudolph missed practice as well with a bruised quad but it's believed he'll be okay for this week as well.

*-Dan Carpenter has been ruled OUT for tomorrow's game because of his groin injury. Shayne Graham will kick for Miami in their game against Dallas.
