News and Notes 11-29-11

*-Matt Leinart broke his collarbone and his season is over. The Texans are down to T.J. Yates with veteran Kellen Clemens behind him until newly signed Jake Delhomme gets up to speed enough to be the top backup. That could very well be by the end of this week. It's also possible that if Yates falls on his face, Delhomme could end up starting in a week or two.

*-Michael Vick wasn't able to practice today and with the Eagles playing Thursday night, he is likely doubtful for the game. I expect Vince Young to get the start.

*-It's expected that Kevin Kolb will be back starting for the Cardinals this week. John Skelton goes back to the bench.

*-Indianapolis has decided to make a change at QB benching Curtis Painter and going with Dan Orlovsky week 13. It's likely to be a permanent move if Orlovsky can be just serviceable; which is no sure thing.

*-Despite the coaching change in Jacksonville, the Jaguars are sticking with Blaine Gabbert as their QB.

*-It's expected that Kyle Orton will take over as the starting QB for the Chiefs this week but the team says that Tyler Palko is still their starting QB. I can't believe they'd really start Palko again and fully expect that Orton will be named the starter by the end of the week.

Running Backs

*-LeSean McCoy has a minor toe sprain but he's been able to practice some on the short week and is fully expected to start and be fine for Thursday night.

*-Although Minnesota is hoping Adrian Peterson will be able to come back this week, I highly doubt it. Peterson has a high ankle sprain and that is almost always a 2 week injury minimum. Expect Toby Gerhart to start week 13.

*-Darren McFadden has been able to do some light running but he is not expected to be able to play week 13 because of his foot sprain. Expect Michael Bush to start again for the Raiders.

*-No word yet on whether Ahmad Bradshaw will be able to play week 13 or not. We won't know until later in the week.

*-Kevin Smith dodged a bullet Thanksgiving Day when what looked like a serious injury turned out to be just an ankle sprain. But Smith is expected to miss at least 1 game and probably two with it so Maurice Morris will be the top RB with Keiland Williams also getting in playing time. The Lions placed Jahvid Best on injured reserve last Friday because of his concussions and we'll revisit him next year. The team also signed Aaron Brown to provide RB depth.

*-Montario Hardesty was active but didn't play last week after aggravating his calf injury in pre-game. This allowed the Browns to use Peyton Hillis a lot in his first game back from his hamstring injury and Hillis held up pretty well. Expect Hillis to be the primary RB going forward with Hardesty competing with Chris Ogbonnaya for backup carries.

*-It appears, at least for the short term, Roy Helu will be the feature RB for the Redskins. But just when you think you know what's going on there rest assured Mike Shanahan will throw you a curveball so you are warned. Ryan Torain appears to have fallen behind Evan Royster in the pecking order behind Helu.

*-Chris Johnson finally exploded week 12. After 11 weeks of waiting for him I finally gave up and starting recommending sitting him last week. Just can't catch a break sometimes.

Wide Receivers

*-Jeremy Maclin has been unable to practice this week because of his hamstring and shoulder injuries and he is not expected to be able to play Thursday night for the Eagles. However DeSean Jackson is expected to start despite being benched for poor effort last week.

*-Also missing from that game is likely to be Sidney Rice. Rice suffered a concussion week 12 and with the short week it seems unlikely he'll get cleared to first practice, and second play Thursday night.

*-Dallas is hoping to get Miles Austin back this week. But with the way Laurent Robinson has been playing don't be surprised if they ease Austin back in rather than just throw him back in for his normal amount of snaps.

*-We don't know if Mario Manningham will be able to return week 13 or not for the Giants. Manningham was a game time inactive last night as he struggles to recover from a knee injury. If Manningham can't play, Ramses Barden would be the #3 WR again.

*-San Diego is hoping to have Malcom Floyd back this week but we won't know until he makes it thru a few practices.

*-The Rams hope to have Danario Alexander back this week. Alexander would be a nice compliment to Brandon Lloyd if his hamstring can hold up during practices this week.

*-No word yet on whether Oakland will have either or both of Jacoby Ford and Denarius Moore week 13. Ford is struggling to return from a foot injury while Moore is dealing with ankle injury.

*-Minnesota placed Michael Jenkins on injured reserve with a knee injury. His season is done.

Tight Ends

*-Despite taking a nasty hit week 12 Tennessee TE Jared Cook isn't thought to have a concussion and he should be okay for week 13.

*-Todd Heap was able to play week 12 for Arizona but caught no passes. But at least it appears he's finally over his hamstring injury.

*-We'll have to wait to see if Minnesota's Kyle Rudolph can practice this week or not. Rudolph missed week 12 with a quad injury.

*-Rian Lindell is expected to miss week 13 with his shoulder injury. The earliest he is expected back is week 14, but even then there's no guarantees. Dave Rayner is expected to kick for Buffalo until Lindell gets back.

*-No word yet on whether the extra time off has allowed Miami's Dan Carpenter get over his groin injury or not. If he can't practice later this week Shayne Graham will kick for the Dolphins again week 13.
