James Starks

Opinions about Starks seem to vary widely. Some see him as a worthwhile early RB3 draftee while others wouldn’t take a chance on him until they’re in the market for a RB4. I initially thought that withGreen Bay’s reluctance to resign free agent Ryan Grant that they probably viewed Starks as their featured back. He may turn out to be the Packers’ featured back, but I’m more in the camp that sees him as a RB4. Here’s why.

Although there aren’t any real “name” backs in the Packers’ backfield, Starks will have competition.Green Baythinks highly of second-year Alex Green and some say he’ll be a threat to overtake Starks as the starter at some point. Keep in mind though that Green suffered an ACL tear last October. However, word has it that he’ll be ready for camp.

TD opportunities will be in question for Starks. Between running and receiving last year, FB John Kuhn scored six times inside the 10-yard line and QB Aaron Rodgers will call his own number a fair amount. Rodgers ran for three TDs in 2011 and has run for 16 scores over the last four seasons.

I also question Starks’ workload. First of all,Green Bayis built to throw. Even in blowout games, it’s rare that they’ll turn things over to the ground attack. And when they do run, it appears the Packers want a balanced ground game. No back saw more than 17 carries in a game last year and most of the time these guys were in the 10-15 carry range.

Intangible indications. Judging from the Packers’ comments about Starks, it doesn’t seem that they’re real enamored with him. They talk more of unrealized potential. That, to me, says that they’re unsure of what they really have.

I agree with everything here, I drafted Starks last year as a 3-4 and would up even dropping him at that.  He will have a few games which will make guys chase the hot player but mostly the running game with the Packers is simply too convaluted.

This is definately a case where one would be better off with the #1 running back on a 2nd or 3rd teir team rather that have the #1 on a #1 team.

Also Dan I haven't had a chance to personaly welcome you...look forward to your insights all year...if they are like this one... it will be money!

Unless I get cornered and he is the best available, I will look elsewhere for a RB. His 2011 numbers weren't all that impressive. I don't think GB will rush enough to make any RB worth much. John Kuhn was more valuable last year than Starks with 6 TDs! In GB it's all about the passng game.

I think he is only drafable in PPR leagues. He will get goaline carries though and he has to stay healthy.

I know they are high on Green and Rogers has gone on record saying they will run the ball more. I like Starks chances to shine this year.

I only play in ppr amd I would be ok with him as my rb4. He could get quite a few scoring chances

Not good news for Starks early on

"The Packers were looking for big things from James Starks in his third season. So far, they haven't seen it. Even though he has taken probably three times as many snaps as Alex Green."

Yeah haven't been hearing good things so far.  I gave him a shot last year and he had the opportunity but came out flat.  Unrealized potential is a good description Dan. I am not looking to pick him up unless its late.

Although I am not sure about the more running Jeff was describing.  I was just reading on ESPN that Rogers said there won't be more running.  Here is the quote:

"Run more?" Rodgers said. "I don't see it happening drastically at all. It's not our identity. But running more effectively and picking the five or six or seven runs that we really like and are our best opportunity for those 12-yard gains? That's what we're going to try to do."
