Guy in second place in my Total Points league is talking junk because my Bears D and SD kicker are doing well. Of course he doesnt mention that I drafted Amendola in the 13th round, Doug Martin in the 7th and traded Peyton for Alfred Morris and then gave up Demarco Murray and Jordy Nelson for Charles and Fitzgerald. But apparently im only winning bcuz of my lucky kicker and defense.

(im trying to copy his league message but having trouble. ill try to include it in a reply).

Don't apologize, just tell him how hard you studied and made calculations on past performances to be sure you had the right K and D on your roster.

Tell him to suck it up! This is what fantasy is about, the trash talking when you are on top. We had a guy do it last year, went wire to almost wire, losing his grip on #1 and finishing #2.

Tell him you have a hard time hearing him from way back there and if he would just win a few games maybe you'll be able to hear him.

So I was breaking down the season by position and a few things stood out to me. Mas can thank kicker and defense for his lead. Mas has outscored me in particular by 68 points at kicker and defense. I think everyone would agree that for the most part kicker and defense is a crapshoot as to whether you pick the right ones. If we discount kicker and defense I would be leading Mas by 27 points, instead I'm down by 41. The top 4 teams in kicker and defense scoring are Mas (131.7), Les (108.1), Twins (92.6), and Norm (92.3). Last year there were also 4 teams that scored 90+ points at kicker and defense. And only one of them scored 90+ in weeks 5-8. So if last year is an indicator this will balance out. And last year the top kicker/defense score through 4 weeks was 114.2. So the points that Mas is getting at kicker and defense is pretty unprecedented.

My Response:

Congratulations on mastering the art of spinning stats, Scott.

Congrats also on your analysis which tells you Im only winning bcuz of mykicker and defense. Thanks for straightening me out. Up until I read your message, I thought drafting a Top 5 QB and WR with my 8th and 13th picks had something to do with it.

Then again, you also thought I got raped on my 2nd trade that got me Charles and Fitzgerald who have combined for 110 pts the two weeks theyve been on my team.

But I'll go ahead and go with your opinion that its my kicker and defense.

Again...spin it how you want, Scott. But if you count our total roster points each week, you'll see I've got you there as well.

I've done some number crunching as well, sir. While you have chosen to focus on kickers and defenses, when you consider the breakdowns of each position...the data shows that I have outdrafted, outmaneuvered and outplayed you at 4 of the six positions we draft at.

Scoreboard!!!

No way....he brought this upon himself and looks like a little whiner/two year old.

I like your response......and I doubt he would be saying anything if the shoe was on the other foot.

I still respect the placekicker position. Then again, I come from 29 years of playing this silly game when kickers WERE the dominate position. I can see many laughing at that statement, but it has been true until maybe the last 9 or 10 or 10 years. Much of this was based on the scoring for kickers, in order to "balance" things out. Extra points were 1 point, a FG under 45 yards was 3 points and anything over 45 years was 7 points.

Now that scoring has changed and 45 is no longer considered a "long" field goal, but more along the lines of average. So it was not uncommon to a majority of the 10 owners starting 2 kickers and 1 QB in their weekly lineup. I still hold kickers of great importance, unlike many owners in many leagues who change kickers like they change underwear. Not sure in our league today a team could win starting 2 kickers and 1 QB. For that to happen scoring would need to be increased for kickers to be on par with QBs.

Then again, this is just my league. I am sure many could still care less who they have as a kicker (or defense, which we don't play for that matter)
