I'm in a 12 team PPR where passing TD's are 6 points and I have the 4th pick. When I run the draft analyzer it gives me Rodgers as the 4th pick which I'm gladly to follow but then when I reference the EBook (Chapter 4 Round by Round Instructions for the Novice Fantasy Drafter) it says the following for Round 1:

Round 1

1) If any of the top 8 RBs are available, take the highest ranked one.

2) If the top 8 RBs are gone, take the WR ranked #1.

3) If the top 8 RBs and WR ranked #1 are gone, take the next highest ranked RB.

Which strategy do I follow????

I think you need to be flexible when it comes to the ebook strategy. With all TDs at 6 a piece, QBs will be drafted earlier since they will score 2-4 times more TDs than any RB or WR. The argument that will be made is that RBs are still who you build a team around, since there are fewer and fewer who bellcow RBs that get the majority of the work in the NFL. At 6 points a piece, you will still be able to secure a good QB if you followed the ebook, but it will also push the QBs to come off the table sooner. Last year I probably would have strongly favored drafting Rodgers if he was there at the 4th spot, but I would have to lean towards grabbing a top RB in that spot. The thinking is that the QB talent pool is only improiving and you will see many QBs through for lots of years and many TDs. Just look at the trend the past few years, it's now a passing league.

You do need to be flexible but also need to understand opportunity cost - that which you cost yourself based upon your decision to draft a QB in round 1.

Granted you'll have a top tier QB, but when time comes to draft a RB, your opportunity cost boils down to costing yourself a top tier RB and replacing him with a 4-5th tier back. If you choose to wait on a QB, sure you won't have Rodgers, but the fall-off among the top tier QBs is not as drastic as among RBs. This year all sources say to wait on the QBs because there is not a whole heck of a lot of points differential between #1 and #8. You'll have a higher quality team if you choose to wait.

Even with 6 points for a TD pass I would still grab a RB at 4. Only if you have to start 2 QB's do I think about a QB that early. There's too many good QB's this year.

I appreciate the insight guys. I do agree with you and will stick to an RB. Thanks again!
